Beginning Spanish

Stage 1 Fluency

Lesson 8

    Learn to:
  • understand new Spanish words
  • say new Spanish words and phrases
  • spell new Spanish words out loud
  • write new Spanish words and phrases
  • read new Spanish words and phrases
  • translate Spanish to English & English to Spanish
    You will need:
  • time
  • willingness to change
  • positive attitude & patience
  • materials for creating flashcards
  • materials for writing practice (Dry erase board & markers, pen & paper...)
  1. Keep listening! Listen to one to two Spanish resources for at least ten to fifteen minutes every day. Online resources at Spanish Exposure.

  2. Review the flashcards from previous lessons daily. Make sure you can say the Spanish words and letter names.

  3. Watch Sight Words List 6. LISTEN with your eyes closed. Do NOT read the Spanish translations at the end of the video yet.

  4. After you can understand all of the words while listening with your eyes closed, listen and repeat. Try to sound exactly like the instructor. First practice repeating with your eyes closed until you can reproduce the sounds. Then watch the video and reproduce the sounds. Don't watch the Spanish translations at the end of the video yet.

  5. When you can reproduce the sounds while listening with your eyes closed, make flashcards. Master the flashcards as you have done in previous lessons, mixing them up and studying them both ways until you automatically know them both ways (Spanish to English and English to Spanish) in any order.

  6. Watch Sight Words List 7. LISTEN with your eyes closed. Do NOT read the Spanish translations yet.

  7. After you can understand all of the words while listening with your eyes closed, then listen and repeat. Try to sound exactly like the instructor. Practice repeating with your eyes closed until you can reproduce the sounds. Then watch the video and reproduce the sounds. Don't watch the Spanish translations at the end of the video yet.

  8. When you can reproduce the sounds while listening with your eyes closed, make flashcards. Master the flashcards as you have done in previous lesson activities.

  9. In this activity, you will practice understanding Spanish. Watch ¿Te gusta? Spanish to English. Listen to the Spanish sentence. Say the English translation before the English sentence appears on the screen. Do this activity until you can say all of the translations correctly before the English words appear.

  10. Practice speaking Spanish. Watch ¿Te gusta?. Listen and repeat the Spanish sentences until you sound like the narrator.

  11. Practice translating from English to Spanish and practice writing in Spanish. Watch ¿Te gusta? English to Spanish.
    When you see the English sentences, write and say the Spanish sentences. Pause the video if you need to while you write each Spanish sentence. Say the Spanish sentence as you write it. You may want to use a dry erase board to write the Spanish sentences.

  12. Make flashcards for each sentence in ¿Te gusta? English to Spanish. Create the flashcards and learn the phrases using the same techniques that you have used in previous lessons to learn Sight Words.

  13. Review your Spanish flashcards daily. These are basic words and phrases that native Spanish speakers learn as babies and toddlers. Find ways to integrate these basic words and phrases into your daily life.
