Beginning Spanish

Stage 1 Fluency

Lesson 6

    Learn to:
  • understand new Spanish words
  • say new Spanish words
  • spell new Spanish words out loud
  • write new Spanish words
  • read new Spanish words
    You will need:
  • time
  • willingness to change
  • positive attitude & patience
  • materials for creating flashcards
  • materials for writing practice (Dry erase board & markers, pen & paper...)
  1. Listen to Spanish for a minimum of ten to fifteen minutes daily. Use only one or two resources. Online resources at Spanish Exposure. Keep listening!

  2. Review the flashcards from previous lessons daily. Make sure you can say the Spanish words and letter names.

  3. Watch Beyond Memorization. If you want to speak Spanish fluently, begin to integrate Spanish into your daily life. Be creative with the Spanish alphabet and all of the Spanish words and phrases you're learning and find ways to use them throughout the day by talking to yourself or to other people. Get to a point where you can use the alphabet, words, and phrases automatically throughout the day.
  4. Watch Sight Words List 3 and only read the English words. LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN with your eyes closed. Do NOT read the Spanish translations at the end of the video yet. (You will use the Spanish translations later in this lesson.)

  5. After you can understand all of the words while listening with your eyes closed, then begin to listen and repeat. Try to sound exactly like the instructor. First practice repeating with your eyes closed until you can reproduce the sounds. Then watch the video and reproduce the sounds. Don't watch the Spanish translations at the end of the video yet.

  6. When you can reproduce the sounds while listening with your eyes closed, make flashcards. Look at the Spanish translations at the end of the video. Write the English word on one side of the card and the Spanish word on the other side of the card. As you write each Spanish word, spell the Spanish word out loud, saying the Spanish letters, and say the Spanish word. Study the flashcards Spanish to English and then English to Spanish. When you study the flashcards from English to Spanish, say and write the Spanish word. Mix up the flashcards and study them both ways until you can automatically know them both ways (Spanish to English and English to Spanish) in any order.

  7. Watch Sight Words List 4 and only read the English words. LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN with your eyes closed. Do NOT read the Spanish translations at the end of the video yet. (You will use the Spanish translations later in this lesson.)
